How To Survive Caregiving With Sanity & A Sense Of Humor

Keynote Presentation by Jim Comer

Following his father’s massive stroke and his mother’s dementia diagnosis, Jim became an overnight caregiver. The only surviving child, he quit his job in California and moved back to Texas to help his parents. While everyone looked at him as “the man with all the answers,” he soon realized that he didn’t even know the questions. In fourteen years of caregiving, Jim lived the questions, learned the answers and has shared them with audiences across America.

Jim’s talk is positive, entertaining, and full of insights on issues that will face every family:

  • Having candid conversations with your parents as they age before there is a crisis.
  • Making sure they have their important documents: wills, powers of attorney, and end of life decisions in writing
  • Knowing which siblings will show up for caregiving and which will be missing in action
  • Learning how to choose a first-rate long-term care community and monitor its services

With laugh-out-loud humor, Jim deals with moments for which there is no preparation:

  • You find three gallons of Scotch in your dad’s independent living room closet.
  • Your mother wants to visit her sister who has been dead for 8 years.
  • At a crowded dinner table in the retirement home, your dad loudly announces that he wants you to give him an enema after lunch.

Through it all, Jim kept his wits – and his wit – and forged a deeper, more intimate relationship with his parents and found that “patience is the currency of love.”
